Born in Luxembourg to a family of artists, Pierre Joseph Redoute went to Paris at 13 where he met an armature botanist who taught him to “dissect flowers and portray their diagnostic characteristics.” Patronized by two queens and two empresses, Redoute became the most celebrated flower painter of his time. “Les Roses” was last of his greatest collection.
